Marcus Kallionkieli 19-20 Season Highlights

Marcus Kallionkieli 19-20 Season Highlights

Jack Manning

Marcus Kallionkieli isn’t your typical NHL prospect. Unlike most Finnish hockey players, Kallionkieli has played the majority of his junior career in North America and may be ready to take the next step in his career sooner than later. Having already signed to his entry level contract last summer, Kallionkieli spent the first few months of his season recuperating from a training injury that required surgery. Although he didn’t have the on-ice success that he would have hoped for in his first WHL season, it is clear that he has all of the physical tools necessary to turn pro.

What sets Kallionkieli apart from his peers is his deadly shot. Although he only had one goal this year, the young Finn is only a year removed from a 29-goal season. If he can take full advantage of his extended off-season to train, he will likely rediscover his scoring touch. Kallionkielli is also a very strong skater for his size and has the potential to become an effective middle-six winger in the NHL.

Because he was drafted out of the USHL last year, the Golden Knights will have the ability to assign Kallionkieli to the AHL if they believe he is ready. However, because Golden Knights General Manager, Kelly McCrimmon owns Kallionkieli’s WHL team (the Wheat Kings) the Knights will have the ability to keep a close eye on his development regardless of where he plays in the fall.
